Distance Learning

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Blessed Sacrament School Community,

As we begin this new educational adventure together, I would like to thank everyone - students, parents, and other staff members - for your understanding, support, and cooperation in this time of sudden change due to the present global pandemic situation. This will be a challenge to transition to our new distance learning format on such short notice. Expect some glitches along the way. The format will evolve as we receive feedback and gain practical experience with time. However, I am confident that we have a solid strategy at BSS to continue Catholic education in your homes.

Sincerely,
Dr. Gloria Castillo, Principal

A message from Mrs. Daniel:

"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

Hello, BSS first graders! Although we are no longer all together in our classroom at school, I am continuing to teach you and we are still learning together. You are now learning from your new virtual classroom at home.

On school days, our live Zoom classroom takes place between 9:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. The link to the LIVE session is always available in the Google Classroom STREAM and the video of the day is always posted by Noon. As needed, LIVE parent/student/teacher sessions via Zoom (at more convenient times) are also available by appointment.

Daily classwork is posted to Remind and our Google Classroom. Plus, all homework assignments, quizzes & tests are posted in Google Classroom, check it daily.

I miss our high fives! See you online at 9am!

GRADE 2 RESOURCES

A message from Mrs. Jeske:

Hi, second graders! Next week, we will continue working on our lessons as if we were together here in the classroom. I am recording lessons for you so that if you do not understand something, you can listen to the lesson again. Please be sure to take a picture of your completed work and send it via email so that I can give you a grade for the great work you will do. Soon, we will get to see and speak to each other on Google Meet. My office hours will be from 9:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M., Monday-Friday. If you need help with your assignments or just want to say "hi", I will be very, very happy to see you. God bless all of you.

My office hours will be from 10:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M., Monday-Friday. Remember, you are all responsible third graders and I know that you will try your best and ask for help when needed. GRADE 5 RESOURCES

A message from Miss Gomez:

Every morning, students should log on to Google Classroom and complete their morning work/check-in assignment. Assignments for Religion, ELA, History, Science and Math will be posted daily on our Google Classroom. We will continue to use the following resources:

MIDDLE SCHOOL RESOURCES

For middle school students, all assignments will be posted in Google Classroom (log-in with your school email address and password) in the appropriate virtual subject classrooms. Please check daily. If the posted assignment due dates cannot be met, please have a parent/guardian contact the appropriate teacher with an explanation. We will try to be as flexible and understanding as any unusual circumstances may warrant.

We will make every effort to respond to all emails from students and parents in a timely fashion. In addition, each subject teacher will offer at least two hours of virtual office hours online with optional video conferencing every school day:

8:00 A.M.-10:00 A.M. - Mrs. Shaw (Rel. 7, ELA 7, Sci. 6-8) and Mrs. Pitoniak (Advanced Math 6-8)
9:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. - Mr. Seibert (Rel. 8, ELA 8, Regular Math 6-8)
10:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M. - Mrs. Prerost (Rel. 6, ELA 6, Hist./SS 6-8) and Mr. Bryant (Coding/P.E./Misc.)

We will post a Google Meet access code at the beginning of each office hour. We may also offer optional group video conferencing for the various subjects. Be aware that for child safety reasons all Google Meet sessions may be recorded. Below is a list of resources:

A message from Mrs. Prerost:

Students, we will be using Google Classroom in middle school to post assignments on a daily and weekly basis. Please check the subjects I teach in order to keep up with assignments.

A message from Mrs. Shaw:

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." (Psalm 32:8)

Please check in every morning on Google Classroom for updates to assignments, Google Hangout/Meet times, and any other announcements. Our lessons in Religion, ELA, Science, Math, History, Art, and P.E. will continue using the online resources that we have used all year. Communication with parents will still include Remind, email, and virtual office hours via Google Meet.

A message from Mr. Seibert:

Although distance learning isn’t the same as onsite classroom instruction, it does offer some unique advantages, especially for self-motivated learners. My hope, therefore, is not only to maintain our high standard of education but also to open up even more learning opportunities afforded by this distance learning format. For instance, I plan to offer an optional online intensive course in Latin and an optional introductory course in German for highly motivated BSS middle school students and BSS alumni presently in high school. Watch out for an announcement soon.

MRS. LUDOLPH READING

Mary Ludolph, Blessed Sacrament School graduate (Class of 2006) and younger sister of our own Mrs. Flores, has graciously offered to read chapters from J.K. Rowling's famous Harry Potter novels during our campus hiatus to any BSS students who might be interested. We will be updating the list below on a regular basis as new chapters are uploaded:

Red Nose Day: Joke-Ha-Thon (Service Project)

All year long one BSS class has led a service project for the school. During the month of May, first grade is responsible for leading the project. Our service project is Red Nose Day.

Red Nose Day is a campaign with the mission to end child poverty by funding programs that keep children safe, healthy and educated. Through the power of entertainment, the organization brings people together to laugh and have fun, all while raising life-changing cash for the children that need it the most.

Why the silly Red Nose? It’s simple, universal and — best of all — a fun way to create connections and break through barriers. A Red Nose encourages people to come together, share a laugh and gives the world something to smile about. It’s a powerful way to start a conversation about Red Nose Day and its goal: to end child poverty one nose at a time.

This service project ends on Red Nose Day 2020 — Thursday, May 21, 2020.

Hasbro is matching our fundraising efforts up to $50K. The earlier we gain donations, the better chance we have of doubling our efforts.

How can you participate in the Joke-Ha-Thon?

1. Take a video of you telling a joke or two. Share it to social media with the link to our school's Red Nose Day fundraising page. Attach your video to your service project assignment in Google Classroom too.
2. Write down (or type and print) a joke, take a picture of it and post it to social media with the link to our school's Red Nose Day fundraising page. Attach the photo to your service project assignment in Google Classroom too.
3. Tell jokes to extended family members over the phone or FaceTime and provide them the link to our school's Red Nose Day fundraising page. Type your joke in the comments section of your service project assignment in Google Classroom.
4. Enjoy the jokes told by others and simply donate on our school's Red Nose fundraising page. Type a comment in the comments section your service project assignment in Google Classroom.

Things to note:

*No donation amount is too small.
*Jokes MUST be respectable.
*If you want a Red Nose in your video like Mrs. Daniel, you need to have the Snapchat app on a cell phone and buy the digital Red Nose through the attached NosesOn link. Minimum donation is $1.The filter only lasts for 48 hours. Red Noses are not being sold in Walgreen's stores this year due to COVID-19.
*Remember to ask your viewers to donate to the cause through our fundraising page. Ask your donor to note what grade you're in in the donation comments section (if you want your class to get credit).
*Use the hash tags #rednoseday2020BSS if you post on social media so we can find your video or pictures on our virtual stage.
*Plus, if you use #JokeHaThon and tag @RedNoseDayUSA, you could be featured on one of Red Nose Day's social channels.

Let's do our part to end child poverty through the power of entertainment. Ready. Set. Go.
